When you think about your resume, you tend to think of including your experience, job responsibilities, education, etc. "Skills are the most important factor when it comes to landing a job right now," LinkedIn career expert Blair Heitmann recently told CNBC Make It. Some of your skills you can work into bullets under experience but for the rest, include them under the skills section of your resume. But what exactly are soft skills? "If you don't have key skills … in the skills section, it's really unlikely that your profile is coming up," Durham said.
Now, the slate is clear for you to find your dream job or a stepping stone on the path to your dream career. Here are a few quick resume tips: Read the job description and mirror some of the language when describing your experience. Think of a key career achievement and briefly explain the steps you took that got you there. Think of a key career achievement and briefly explain the steps you took that got you there. Jennie Rogerson, the global head of people at graphic design platform Canva, shared with CNBC Make It four untraditional job interview questions — and how to answer them.
When it comes to your resume, career experts agree: The most important section is your "experience" section. Your skills and education sections help underscore what you have to bring as a candidate. And when it comes to your skills section, there are several points to consider, like placement and which skills to include. Here's how career experts recommend writing it. "It's more common to have it near the education section at the bottom part of your resume," says Vicki Salemi, career expert at Monster.
Santos admitted to doing so in an interview with the New York Post later that month, saying, "My sins here are embellishing my resume. And fully 55% of Americans say they've lied on their resumes at least once, according to an October 2022 StandOutCV survey of 1,785 U.S. adults. Career experts do draw a distinction between lying and embellishing — but, they say, you shouldn't do either. Either way, nowadays, lying or embellishing is a bad idea, in part because it's so easy to get caught. A colleague could peruse a LinkedIn page and say, "Wait a minute, that's not what we did there," says Bauke.
Make sure to read the job description and mirror some of the language as it pertains to your own experience. Experts hotly debate the ideal length of a resume ― some say one page, others are adamant about two. "They get that, but they want to see what you're doing now." If you decide to make your resume a little bit longer, you can include more of your roles and accomplishments. Ultimately, when it comes to how much experience to include on your resume, "it's all about relevancy," says Goredema.
Of course, in order to get considered for any role, it's key to write a powerful resume that meets the requirements of the job. "There are so many challenges when it comes to putting together who you are, what you do best on a piece of paper," says Octavia Goredema, career coach and author of "Prep, Push, Pivot." "But the resume summary is the one standout opportunity that you have to demonstrate what makes you a strong candidate." Since a resume summary is relatively short, you want it to pack a punch. As with the rest of the resume, when you write your summary, try to mirror the language in the job description.
The majority of employers, 66%, currently require employees to work from the office, according to a September 2022 ResumeBuilder.com survey of 1,000 American business leaders. When it comes to convincing those who'd still prefer remote work to coming back, most employers are trying to make it worth their while. A majority of companies, 88%, are currently offering incentives like catered meals and commuter benefits to get workers to return, according to ResumeBuilder.com. That being the case, can workers whose companies are asking them to come back take this as an opportunity to negotiate their arrangement? Experts say it's a good time to negotiate your work arrangement if coming back to the office will impact your productivity.
For instance, while the standard resume is written in black font, should you consider colors like green or purple as well? 'Nobody really wants a creative accountant'When it comes to a colorful font, experts agree it really depends on the industry you're in. Keep it to Arial, Times New Roman or Calibri, 11-point, black font on a white or cream-colored resume. However, when you are in a field "that they're hiring you for your creativity," says Bauke, like graphic design or animation, "you've got more room to play with." If you've chosen a color other than black, try printing out your resume to see if it's legible before using it.
